When Should a Business Replace Its Laptops and PCs?
A business computer does not need replacing because it is a certain age. It needs replacing when keeping it creates more risk, downtime or support cost than replacing it.
1. It cannot run a supported operating system
If the device cannot run a currently supported operating system or receive the security updates your business requires, replacement becomes a security and support decision rather than a performance preference.
2. Reliability problems are becoming normal
Random crashes, storage errors, overheating, intermittent charging and repeated hardware faults are signs the device is moving from an asset to a support problem.
3. Ordinary work is consistently slow
If email, Teams, browser-based systems and line-of-business applications are slow despite a healthy software setup, the hardware may no longer match the workload.
4. The battery no longer supports the working day
A laptop that needs to stay attached to power may still function, but it has lost an important part of its business value. Battery replacement can be worthwhile on otherwise good hardware; on an older device it may simply delay the inevitable.
5. Warranty and parts support have ended
Business hardware is easier to operate when failures have a predictable repair/replacement path. Once warranty and parts availability become poor, downtime risk increases.
6. The device is generating repeated support work
A machine that consumes engineer time every month can cost more than its replacement even if each individual fault looks minor.
7. It no longer meets the role
Roles change. A device bought for email and documents may not be suitable when the same person later works with large datasets, design tools or specialist applications.
